Verglichen mit dem Jahr 2000 entspricht dies einer Zunahme von 36%. Unter den 6.2 Millionen Fahrzeugen befanden sich 4.7 Millionen Personenwagen und 0.8 Millionen Motorräder. ### Fahrzeugbestand Der Bestand der Strassenmotorfahrzeuge (ohne Motorfahrräder) ist zwischen den Jahren 2000 und 2020 um 36% auf 6.2 Millionen angestiegen. Rund drei Viertel davon sind Personenwagen, wobei seit einiger Zeit ein Trend hin zu Fahrzeugen mit Hybrid- oder Elektro-Antrieb besteht. Reine Elektroautos waren 2020 etwa 43'400 immatrikuliert, was einem Anteil an den Personenwagen von 0.9% entsprach. Am höchsten war die «Elektro-Quote» mit 2.0% im Kanton Zug. Eine starke Zunahme ist auch bei den Motorrädern und den leichten Sachentransportfahrzeugen zu verzeichnen: Deren Bestände sind seit dem Jahr 2000 um 56% beziehungsweise 74% angestiegen. 2015 besassen 65% aller Haushalte mindestens ein Fahrrad. Ein E-Bike stand im gleichen Jahr rund 7% der Haushalte zur Verfügung. ### Strassenfahrzeuge – neue Inverkehrsetzungen Die Coronavirus-Pandemie hat den Schweizer Automobilmarkt 2020 hart getroffen. Landesweit wurden 336'841 Motorfahrzeuge neu in Verkehr gesetzt. Dies entspricht dem niedrigsten Stand seit 24 Jahren und einem Rückgang um 17.8% im Vergleich zu 2019. Die Neuzulassungen von Personenwagen haben sogar um 23.7% abgenommen. Trotz dieses historischen Rückgangs ist die Zahl der neu zugelassenen Elektroautos (+49.8%) und Plug-in-Hybride (+225.7%) 2020 einmal mehr angestiegen.
