A l'heure actuelle, 73,7% de la population vivent dans des zones urbaines, contre moins d'un tiers en milieu rural. Ce taux correspond à celui des conurbations dans les pays européens. Rapportée à l'ensemble du territoire, la densité de la population se chiffre à 206 personnes par km² (2014). La population urbaine a augmenté de 1,1% en 2011. La population rurale a augmenté de 0,9% et a atteint 2,0 millions de personnes.
