La controverse sur les minarets fait référence à la polémique tant juridique que politique qu’a déclenché dans notre pays, durant les années 2000, le débat sur la construction de nouveaux minarets. Ce référendum contre les minarets trouve son origine dans l’action lancée, le 1er mai 2007, par un groupe d'hommes politiques de centre droit, majoritairement issus de l’Union Démocratique Fédérale (UDF) et de l’Union Démocratique du Centre (UDC), baptisé Comité Egerkinger. Son but: soumettre à votation l’initiative populaire fédérale «Contre la construction de minarets» afin que la Constitution fédérale suisse décrète que «la construction de minarets est interdite». Le gouvernement suisse a recommandé que l’amendement proposé soit rejeté, pour cause de non-conformité avec les principes fondamentaux de la Constitution. Lors du vote de 2009, il existait sur le sol helvétique quatre minarets qui flanquaient respectivement les mosquées de Zurich, Genève, Winterthour et Wangen près d’Olten.
