# Part de la population résidante de confession catholique chrétienne

## Description

L'environnement religieux de la Suisse a fortement évolué ces dernières décennies. Les évangéliques réformés, clairement majoritaires en 1950 (56%) sont aujourd'hui minoritaires (2017: 23,8%). Les catholiques représentent depuis 1970 la principale communauté religieuse de notre pays (2017: 35,9%). Cette évolution est due avant tout à l'immigration qu'il a connue dans la seconde moitié du 20e siècle. La part des autres religions s'accroît (1980: 3,2%; 2017: 7,5%). Le nombre des musulmans avant tout a beaucoup progressé: ils étaient 152'200 en 1990 et sont 380'000 en 2017.

Le caractère privé et personnel de l'appartenance à une religion est de plus en plus marqué. En témoigne la nette croissance du nombre de personnes qui rejettent l'appartenance à une communauté religieuse qu'ils ont «héritée» de leurs parents, et qui déclarent être sans confession (1,1% en 1970; 26% en 2017).

L'identité confessionnelle héritée du passé reste marquée dans les cantons, malgré les migrations internes et l'immigration. Ainsi, les catholiques représentent bien plus des trois quarts de la population de Suisse centrale et des cantons de Fribourg, du Valais, du Tessin, d'Appenzell Rhodes-Intérieures et du Jura. Le seul canton où prédominent fortement les évangéliques réformés est Berne (50,2%). Ces identités religieuses régionales influent sur diffé- rents aspects de la vie quotidienne, comme la structure des partis politiques ou les comportements démographiques (taille des familles, divorces).
