Ces chiffres ont globalement progressé de 36% par rapport à l'an 2000. Parmi les 6.2 millions de véhicules, on trouve 4.7 millions de voitures de tourisme et 0.8 million de motocycles. ### Parc de véhicules Entre 2000 et 2020, le parc de véhicules routiers à moteur (sans les cyclomoteurs) s'est accru de 36% pour atteindre 6.2 millions d'unités. Environ trois quarts du total sont des voitures de tourisme, parmi lesquelles on trouve depuis quelque temps une part croissante de voitures électriques ou hybrides. Environ 43'400 voitures purement électriques étaient immatriculées en 2020, soit 0.9% des voitures de tourisme. Le canton de Zoug affichait le taux le plus élevé de véhicules électriques: 2.0%. On observe aussi une forte progression du nombre de motocycles et de véhicules légers de transport de choses. En effet, leurs nombres ont augmenté respectivement de 56% et 74% depuis 2000. En 2015, 65% des ménages possédaient au moins un vélo et 7% disposaient d'un vélo électrique. ### Véhicules routiers – nouvelles mises en circulation La pandémie de coronavirus a fortement touché le marché automobile suisse en 2020. Sur l’ensemble de l'année, 336'841 véhicules à moteur ont été mis en circulation dans le pays, soit le niveau le plus bas depuis 24 ans et une baisse de 17.8% par rapport à 2019. Les nouvelles immatriculations de voitures de tourisme ont même diminué de 23.7%. Malgré cette chute historique, le nombre de voitures de tourisme électriques (+49,8%) et celui des hybrides rechargeables (+225.7%) mises en circulation a une nouvelle fois augmenté en 2020.
