Comprende i ristoranti, gli alberghi e gli stabilimenti che operano in altre forme di ristorazione e accoglienza di turisti (mense, campeggi, ecc.). Nel 2018, questo ramo registrava circa 256'900 addetti e 28'985 stabilimenti. Più di 79'000 addetti appartenevano al settore alberghiero e più di 177'000 alla ristorazione, mentre il resto si occupava delle altre attività del ramo. In totale, solo 260 aziende di catering avevano più di 50 dipendenti, mentre circa 19.300 avevano meno di 10 dipendenti. Tra le aziende di ristorazione con il maggior fatturato in Svizzera figurano il Gruppo SV, il Groupe Eldora, la Cooperativa Migros, la Coop Gastronomia e la McDonald's Svizzera. In termini assoluti, i Cantoni di Zurigo (3298), di Berna (2501) e Vaud (2095) registrano il maggior numero di addetti in questa attività. L'importanza degli alberghi e dei ristoranti è però maggiore nelle regioni turistiche: nei Grigioni rientrava in questo ramo il 14% degli addetti. Questa quota è elevata anche per i Cantoni Appenzello Interno, Vallese, Obvaldo e Uri (sopra il 10%). Viceversa, la quota più debole è registrata da Basilea Città con il 4%. Zugo, Neuchâtel, Argovia e il Giura registrano una percentuale inferiore al 5%. Bisogna inoltre sottolineare che questa attività occupa un forte numero di stranieri, 113'000 nel 2018, pari al 44% del totale, una percentuale più elevata di quella valida per l'insieme dei settori secondario e terziario (26%). Dei lavoratori stranieri appena assunti, circa il 95 per cento proveniva da Paesi dell'UE/AELS. Gli alberghi e ristoranti occupano inoltre più donne (143'100, pari al 55,7%) che uomini e il numero di posti a tempo parziale si avvicina a 119'300 (46,4%).
