Attualmente 73,7% della popolazione vivono in aree di stampo urbano e meno di un terzo in aree rurali abitate. Nel raffronto europeo, ciò corrisponde alla tipica densità di popolazione degli agglomerati. Per l'insieme della Svizzera, la densità di popolazione è di 206 persone/km² (2014). Nel 2011, le aree urbane sono cresciute dello 1,1%.
