La nuova legge federale sull'unione domestica registrata di coppie omosessuali migliora la loro posizione giuridica senza equiparare l’unione domestica registrata al matrimonio. La nuova legge consente alle coppie omosessuali di far registrare la loro unione all’ufficio dello stato civile e quindi di tutelarla giuridicamente. L’unione domestica registrata fonda una comunione di vita con diritti e doveri reciproci ed è trattata giuridicamente come il matrimonio ad esempio in campo fiscale, ereditario, delle assicurazioni sociali e della previdenza professionale. La legge sull’unione domestica registrata non consente invece a due donne o a due uomini di adottare insieme un bambino. Anche le tecniche di procreazione medicalmente assistita sono loro vietate. Non possono quindi fondare una famiglia nel senso stretto del termine. Contro la legge è stato lanciato il referendum. Il comitato contrario alla legge vede in essa un pericolo per il matrimonio e la famiglia. Ritiene inoltre che la legge sia inutile perché il diritto in vigore consente alle coppie omosessuali di regolare a sufficienza la loro relazione. Il progetto è stato accettato.
