Circa la metà (48%) della popolazione svizzera vive in un edificio costruito tra il 1961 e il 2000, mentre il 35% abita in un edificio il cui anno di costruzione è antecedente al 1961. Quest’epoca di costruzione corrisponde al 42% dell’intero parco immobiliare. Nel Cantone di Basilea-Città, i tre quarti (75%) degli edifici sono stati costruiti prima del 1961. Il 58% della popolazione del Cantone di Basilea-Città vive in edifici appartenenti a questa categoria. Il 17% della popolazione svizzera abita in edifici costruiti dopo il 2000 (dato aggiornato al 2015). Questa categoria rappresenta il 14% di tutti gli edifici a scopo abitativo. Nei Cantoni di Zugo (27%), Svitto (26%) e Friburgo (25%) la percentuale della popolazione che vive in questi edifici è relativamente alta. Il Cantone di Friburgo dispone di un nuovo parco immobiliare fuori dal comune: il 22% degli edifici risale al 21° secolo. Di contro, la percentuale degli edifici costruiti in questo periodo è solo del 3% nel Cantone di Basilea-Città, del 7% nel Cantone di Glarona e dell’8% nel Cantone di Appenzello Esterno (cfr. Grafico G7). La differenza tra la superficie media per occupante nelle case unifamiliari e quella nelle case plurifamiliari è minore nei nuovi edifici rispetto a quelli più vecchi. Nelle case unifamiliari la superficie media è di 49m2 per occupante negli edifici costruiti tra il 2001 e il 2010 e di 52m2 negli edifici costruiti dopo il 2010 (dal 1981 al 1990: 58m2). Nelle case plurifamiliari corrisponde a 43m2 nell’epoca di costruzione tra il 1981 bis 1990, a 44m2 nel periodo tra il 1991 e il 2000, a 47m2 in quello tra il 2001 e il 2010 e a 48m2 in quello tra il 2011 e il 2015 (cfr. Grafico G9). La rilevazione degli edifici e delle abitazioni effettuata nel quadro del censimento della popolazione non si estende a tutti gli edifici, ma solo a quelli che contengono locali destinati a uso abitativo e agli edifici che al momento del censimento risultavano abitati.
