Gli oggetti più antichi, perlopiù statuette rituali rappresentanti animali e uomini o contenitori in ceramica, sono vecchi di diverse migliaia di anni. In Medio Oriente i materiali da costruzione in terracotta sono conosciuti già dal 4 millennio a.C.. La presenza di tegole in terracotta, un'invenzione greca, è stata accertata nella Grecia antica a partire dalla metà del settimo secolo a.C. e a Roma a partire dal secondo secolo a.C.. La produzione di laterizi divenne predominante a Roma e nelle province limitrofe a partire dal secondo secolo d.C.. Nelle nostre regioni in epoca romana i tetti di tegole erano molto frequenti e avevano una grande importanza a Ginevra, ad Avenches ed a Strasburgo. Fino alla metà del XIX secolo le tegole sono state plasmate a mano. Spesso, nei luoghi dove erano conosciuti dei giacimenti di argilla, sorsero piccole imprese che producevano manualmente mattoni, cocendoli con il calore sprigionato dalla combustione della legna. In questo modo un gran numero di paesi e di città avevano una loro fabbrica di mattoni. A partire dalla metà del XIX secolo la produzione di tegole in argilla e di mattoni è stata sempre più meccanizzata. Agevolata dall'invenzione delle macchine a vapore impiegate per lo stampo dei mattoni e dalla scoperta di nuove tecniche di essiccazione e cottura, la produzione aumentò in maniera enorme. In Svizzera tra il 1890 ed il 1896, grazie all'impiego di nuove tecniche di lavorazione, si registrò un aumento della produzione del 60%. In Svizzera, all'inizio del XX secolo, erano attive circa 350 fabbriche di mattoni. Col seguir del tempo, il numero dei posti di produzione di laterizi diminuì ininterrottamente, soprattutto le piccole fabbriche manuali dal volume di produzione limitato furono sostituite da grandi industrie meccanizzate. A partire dal 1968 la produzione manuale di mattoni è praticamente scomparsa. Agevolata dall'introduzione dei forni a tunnel, i quali permettono un processo di cottura continuo, a partire dal 1960 la produzione di mattoni è stata sempre più razionalizzata ed automatizzata. Dal confronto relativo delle quantità di produzione, è possibile identificare il processo di razionalizzazione e modernizzazione degli ultimi 30 anni.
