Nel 2018 il valore aggiunto generato da questo settore ammontava a quasi 33 miliardi CHF, pari a circa il 4,7% del prodotto interno lordo. Se si tiene conto anche del valore aggiunto realizzato dalle assicurazioni, il settore finanziario nel suo complesso contribuisce per il 10% circa al PIL della Svizzera. Nel 2018 i posti di lavoro (in equivalenti a tempo pieno) in questo settore erano circa 204’300, di cui 105'100 nelle banche. Oltre alla creazione diretta di valore aggiunto, il settore bancario contribuisce all’approvvigionamento economico del Paese e della popolazione concedendo crediti e fornendo altri servizi finanziari. In Svizzera esistono 253 banche (dato del 2017). I due grandi gruppi bancari internazionali UBS e Credit Suisse detengono una quota di mercato di circa il 50%. Il restante 50% è ripartito soprattutto tra le 24 banche cantonali, gli istituti esteri, le banche del gruppo Raiffeisen, le banche borsistiche, le banche regionali, le casse di risparmio e le banche private. La struttura territoriale dei posti di lavoro evidenzia una forte concentrazione di questi rami nei centri principali del Paese: Zurigo, Basilea, Berna, Losanna, Ginevra e Lugano. Gli inizi dell’attività bancaria in Svizzera risalgono al XVI secolo, ma solo dopo le due Guerre mondiali il Paese è diventato una piazza finanziaria di rilevanza internazionale. La stabilità, la neutralità, la forza del franco svizzero e l’introduzione del segreto bancario nel 1934 sono alcuni dei fattori che hanno portato a un costante afflusso di capitali dall’estero. La seconda metà del XX secolo ha rappresentato per le banche svizzere un periodo di forte crescita. Tra il 1980 e il 2005 il valore aggiunto del settore finanziario è cresciuto annualmente del 3,5%, mentre l’incremento dei rimanenti comparti dell’economia è stato di appena l’1,3%. La Svizzera è una delle piazze finanziarie più importanti a livello mondiale. A fine 2017 il settore bancario svizzero era al primo posto nel mondo per quanto riguarda la gestione patrimoniale transfrontaliera, con una quota di mercato del 27,5%.
