## Description

L'industria chimica raggruppa gli stabilimenti che operano tra l'altro nella chimica di base e nell'industria farmaceutica. Non rientrano invece in questa categoria gli stabilimenti che si occupano unicamente di ricerca e sviluppo. Questa industria, orientata a livello internazionale, è importante per l'economia svizzera: rappresenta infatti una quota elevata delle esportazioni svizzere.
Nel 2018 l’industria chimico-farmaceutica ha contribuito per il 5,4% al prodotto interno lordo. Si tratta dell’industria leader nel campo delle esportazioni: ogni anno vende infatti all’estero prodotti svizzeri per un valore di circa 88 miliardi CHF, pari al 38,4% delle esportazioni totali. Attualmente l’industria chimico-farmaceutica dà direttamente lavoro a 70’000 persone in Svizzera e a oltre 338'000 persone all’estero.
Le prime aziende chimico-farmaceutiche sono nate nel XIX secolo dall’esigenza di produrre coloranti per l’industria tessile, ma in seguito si sono concentrate soprattutto sui prodotti a elevato valore aggiunto come sieri, vaccini e farmaci. Dopo la crisi e le profonde ristrutturazioni degli anni 1990, nel corso degli anni 2000 il settore farmaceutico ha registrato una forte crescita. Solo in questo comparto, le esportazioni sono passate da 8 miliardi (1990) a 71 miliardi CHF (2015).
Il settore è dominato da solo poche grandi gruppi chimico-farmaceutici, come Novartis, Roche, Merck Serono, Syngenta, Firmenich e Givaudan. Circa la metà delle persone occupate in questo settore lavora tuttavia in piccole e medie imprese. Le aziende attive in quest’ambito sono un migliaio e si concentrano nelle aree di Basilea, Zurigo e Zugo nonché nell’Arco lemanico.
