Da quel momento gli orafi e i gioiellieri della regione iniziarono a dedicarsi alla fabbricazione di orologi. Nel corso del XX secolo, grazie a una serie di innovazioni l’industria orologiera svizzera riuscì a svilupparsi fino a divenire la migliore al mondo. Il primo orologio da polso fu realizzato nel 1926. In seguito vennero introdotte nuove innovazioni ancora più sofisticate, come il primo orologio al quarzo e il primo orologio da polso impermeabile. Negli anni 1970 e 1980 gli orologi da polso elettrici e la concorrenza giapponese provocarono la crisi di questo ramo industriale. Dopo una fase di ridimensionamento, tuttavia, il settore si è ripreso. Le esportazioni sono cresciute, passando dai 4,3 miliardi CHF del 1986 ai 21,7 miliardi del 2019. *Produzione ed esportazione* Nel 2018 l’industria orologiera occupava il terzo posto nella statistica delle esportazioni svizzere, dietro l’industria meccanica (33,5 mia.) e quella chimico-farmaceutica (104,4 mia.). In termini di valore, la Svizzera è il maggior Paese esportatore di orologi al mondo, seguita da Hong Kong e dalla Cina. Questo settore dava lavoro a circa 58’000 persone in Svizzera e rappresentava l’1,5% del prodotto interno lordo. *Operatori principali* In Svizzera esistono circa 700 industrie orologiere, la maggior parte delle quali ha sede a Ginevra o nell’Arco giurassiano.
