Atlas of Switzerland Web – Public Beta Release

Atlas of Switzerland Web (AoS Web) - Version 0.7.13

November 5, 2025

Following the release of the desktop application with an online backend in 2016 (Atlas of Switzerland – Version 4), the Atlas of Switzerland is now available fully on the web for the first time. With this public beta version, a new chapter begins in the history of the national atlas: for the first time, the Atlas runs entirely in the browser – without installation, on all devices, and accessible at any time. This initial web release includes a curated selection of 2D maps together with the essential core features for discovering, searching, and exploring thematic maps. Over the coming weeks and months, the functionality will continue to expand, and new map themes will be added step by step.

New Features

  • Completely new web platform – The Atlas has been redeveloped from the ground up, both technically and visually, and now runs entirely in the browser.
  • Integrated website – The previously separate website is now embedded directly within the Atlas, providing a seamless transition between information and application.
  • Interactive topic overview – On the home page, thematic categories can be explored through an interactive graphic.
  • Filtering and sorting – On the topic overview page, maps can be filtered by category and sorted according to various criteria.
  • Detailed topic view – Each topic page offers a comprehensive overview: the thematic map can be explored interactively (including legend), accompanying texts provide contextual background, and metadata can be accessed directly.
  • Predefined map styles – Each thematic map includes an editorially curated base map style and preconfigured reference layers (e.g., road network, forest cover, settlements).
  • New base map styles – The base map can be displayed in five different styles: Satellite, Light, Dark, Achromatic, and Light Base Map (by swisstopo).
  • Share function – Thematic maps or specific map sections can be shared directly via link or on social media.
  • Semantic search – The new search function creates semantic relationships between search terms and results, making it easier to find thematically related maps.
  • Progressive Web App (PWA) – Atlas of Switzerland Web can be installed as a PWA, providing an app-like experience directly from the browser.
  • Link to desktop application (Atlas of Switzerland v4) – The Download page still offers the latest desktop version, which includes all Atlas maps displayed on a virtual 3D globe.
  • Archive of previous editions – Under “About the Atlas”, high-resolution screenshots and scans of earlier Atlas editions, including the printed version, are available for download.
