Employment law (shop opening hours in public traffic centres) (2005)

The proposal

The Federal Council and Parliament want to allow shops in larger train stations and airports to employ staff on Sundays, regardless of what they sell.

More and more people are shopping in station and airport stores on Sundays. However, under current labor law, these stores are only allowed to employ staff on Sundays if they offer goods and services that travelers need. The Federal Council and Parliament consider this regulation to be too restrictive. It no longer reflects the current lifestyles of large sections of the population. The labor law is therefore to be amended in specific areas. All shops in public transport hubs, i.e. in larger train stations and airports, will now be allowed to employ staff on Sundays. This right will apply regardless of the goods and services offered and the sales area.

The trade unions have launched a referendum against the bill. They fear that the Labor Law will be weakened and that Sunday will become a normal working day in the long term.
