The «energy town» label
The «energy town» label is a record of achievement for local authorities, which set out and implement a sustainable joint energy policy. Energy towns promote renewable energies and environmentally compatible mobility and support the efficient use of resources.
The «energy town» programme is operated by EnergieSchweiz and is intended as a prime example of how, with fully responsible practices, the quality of life can be improved and negative influences on climate change improved. The label represents a consistent and goal-oriented energy policy. Local authorities, which bear the «energy town» label, carry out a comprehensive process resulting in a sustainable energy, transport and environmental policy. Authorities, employers and the local population are all pulling together towards the same goal.
The «energy town» label is awarded by the independent committee of the board of «energy town» trustees. By the end of 2021 460 Swiss local authorities with a total 5.1 million inhabitants were awarded the label. The trademark is in four languages and is registered in most European countries. The local authority can use the «energy town» label for community marketing purposes.
The European Energy Award Gold
Local authorities which have implemented at least 75% of the measures listed in the catalogue produced as part of the certification process can apply for the European Energy Award Gold once they have achieved «energy town» status. With the Gold Award «energy towns» crown their commitment to a future of sustainable energy.
The European Energy Award (EEA) is the European counterpart to the «energy town» label. The EEA is a certification process and quality management system for local authorities and towns throughout Europe which make an important contribution to energy efficiency and the increasing introduction of renewable energies.
