Federal law on the taxation of HGVs LSVA (1998)

Categories: State and Politics › Votes › Transport and Energy policy

The proposal

The introduction of a capacity-based tax on heavy-goods vehicles (LSVA) incorporated into the Swiss Constitution in 1994 is designed as a contribution to the implementation of the initiative to protect the Alps and as a way of raising funds for various railway projects. The annual revenue anticipated from the tax on heavy-goods vehicles (between 0.6 and 3 centimes per tonne and kilometre, depending on weight), i.e. one billion Swiss francs, is to be allocated to the Confederation and the cantons on a two-third/one-third basis. The Swiss Heavy Goods Vehicle Federation (ASTAG) successfully called for a referendum against the legislation and was supported by the Swiss People's Party (SVP), the Swiss Commercial Federation and the car industry federations.
