Categories: State and Politics › Votes › Environmental policy

Context

Switzerland imports around three quarters of its energy. Crude oil and natural gas consumed in Switzerland come entirely from abroad. These fossil fuels are not are not infinitely available and place a heavy burden on the climate. In order to reduce dependence on foreign countries and environmental pollution, the Federal Council and Parliament want to reduce the consumption of oil and gas. At the same time, more energy is to be produced in Switzerland.

The proposal

With the bill, Switzerland is gradually reducing its consumption of crude oil and natural gas. The goal is for Switzerland to become climate-neutral by 2050. The bill provides for measures to reduce energy consumption. Those who replace their oil, gas or electric heating systems will receive financial relief. In addition, companies that invest in climate-friendly technologies will be supported. The bill is an indirect counter-proposal to the Glacier Initiative. Unlike the initiative, it does not contain a ban on fossil fuels such as gasoline, diesel, heating oil and gas. A referendum has been filed against the bill.
