EuroCarto 2024

The EuroCarto conference took place in Vienna from 9 to 11 September and was an engaging event with a clear focus on cartography. The topics spanned a wide range, including sustainability and cartography, education, atlases, artificial intelligence and cartography, history, thematic cartography and web cartography.
We had the opportunity to participate in the conference with the Atlas of Switzerland and present on two topics. Our first presentation, Cartographic Visualization of the Effects of Climate Change: A Practical Application for the Atlas of Switzerland, showcased our current work on visualising the effects of climate change. As the conference made evident, this is a highly relevant topic, and there is a great need for effective visualisations in this area. The second presentation, Migrating the Atlas of Switzerland to the Web: A Comparative Analysis of 2D and 3D Open-Source Web Rendering Frameworks, was of a technical nature and highlighted the results of our research into different rendering libraries for the future web version of the atlas.
Overall, the outcome of the conference was positive: we attended many interesting presentations and gained new ideas and insights. We also used the event as an opportunity to network with colleagues.
For those who missed our presentations at EuroCarto 2024, there will be another opportunity to attend them at the autumn event of the Swiss Society of Cartography in Olten on 21 October.
